USI Planted 20,000 Trees in Inner Mongolia and Ningxia to Combat Desertification

(September 7, 2018, Shanghai) From September 1 to 4, the tree-planting volunteer team of USI (SSE: 601231), a giant electronics designer and manufacturer in the world, went to Ningxia Lingwu Baijitan National Nature Reserve to participate in the Million Tree Project (MTP) initiated by Shanghai Roots & Shoots. The volunteers planted ammopiptanthus mongolicus and created grids of grass squares in an endeavor to protect the environment.
USI has participated in the Million Tree Project (MTP) initiated by Shanghai Roots & Shoots for six consecutive years since 2013, and has planted a total of 24,000 saplings in Inner Mongolia, which can help reduce thousands of tons of carbon dioxide once they grow up. Given the fact that the external climatic conditions in Ningxia are more severe than those in Inner Mongolia, it's decided that this year's Million Tree Project (MTP) should cover Ningxia in addition to Inner Mongolia, and that 10,000 shrubs should be planted in Ningxia. Apart from donations from the company, employees around the global also began to donate trees from 2016, and a total of 10,818 trees have been donated over the past three years, indicating their determination to take actions to perform their responsibilities as citizens of the Earth.
The total area of sandy land in China is approximately 1.72 million square kilometers, which is even larger the land area of Tibet and Sichuan combined. In particular, the sandy land in regions including the northwest, northeast and north of China accounts for 85% of the total. Now, desertification resulting from the impact of desertification has become one of the top 10 environment concerns in the world. If the area of desertified land continues to expand, it will affect not only China but also neighboring countries.
In addition to natural factors, human-induced overfarming and overgrazing are also contributors to frequent dust storms in Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. To fight against desertification, Ningxia has, based on desertification control measures in different regions, developed 'grids of grass squares', a special sand fixation technique to prevent further deterioration of desertification. By the technique, grass squares, each 1 square meter, are formed into grids. The grass is 15 centimeters under the ground, and about 20 centimeters above the ground. In addition to reducing wind-blown sand and dust and slowing down the expansion of sandy land, the grass can also be an abundant source of organic substances and nutrients for the sandy land after the roots rot under the ground, making the environment suitable for vegetation. Although such grids of grass squares are inconspicuous, they help to protect the local environment in Ningxia for 60 years of economic development and human survival.
After watching the demonstration by the personnel of the reserve, the volunteers of USI worked with another seven companies to build a total of 1,000 grass squares on sandy land of 2,000 square meters. They said, "Although it's exhausting to build grass squares, we felt encouraged and obliged to make a difference when we thought about the positive impact of such an action on the future environment." Sweating in the scorching sun, they understood the difficulty in tree planting and worked hard with their own hands to create a better future for the environment of the Earth.
