Operation and Governance
Responsible AI Governance
USI is committed to the responsible, secure, transparent, and ethical development, adoption, and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As AI technologies continue to evolve, we implement robust governance and risk management practices to ensure AI is used in a manner consistent with information security, privacy protection, legal compliance, business ethics, and sustainable development objectives.
AI Governance Framework
In 2026, USI established the AI Governance Council, a cross-functional governance body comprising representatives from Information Security, Legal, Privacy, Risk Management, Enterprise Architecture, and business functions.
The Council is responsible for:
- Defining AI governance strategy and policy
- Reviewing high-risk AI use cases and material risks
- Overseeing AI-related security and privacy controls
- Promoting governance consistency across the organization
- Reporting AI governance matters to the Information Security Steering Committee (ISSC) and Board-level oversight
This governance framework ensures that AI innovation is aligned with risk management, compliance, and sustainability objectives.
Principles of Responsible AI
USI’s Responsible AI Governance Framework is built upon eight key principles:
- Reliability & Safety: AI systems are validated, tested, and continuously monitored to ensure reliability, accuracy, and fitness for their intended purpose.
- Security: AI systems and related data are protected through information security controls, including access management, logging, monitoring, encryption, and security testing.
- Privacy: AI use must comply with data protection requirements, including data minimization, purpose limitation, and privacy governance practices.
- Fairness: USI evaluates AI systems for potential bias, unfair treatment, or unintended discriminatory outcomes and takes corrective actions when necessary.
- Human Oversight: AI serves as a decision-support tool rather than an autonomous decision-maker. Human review, approval, and accountability remain essential, especially for high-impact use cases.
- Transparency: USI promotes transparency regarding the role, capabilities, limitations, and appropriate use of AI in business processes and outputs.
- Accountability: Roles, responsibilities, governance processes, and escalation mechanisms are clearly defined to ensure accountability throughout the AI lifecycle.
- Environmental Responsibility: Environmental considerations, including resource efficiency and energy consumption, are incorporated into AI technology selection and operation.
Responsible AI in Practice
USI applies a risk-based approach to AI governance and requires AI technologies to be used responsibly and within approved boundaries.
Key practices include:
- Use only approved AI tools and services for business purposes
- Protect confidential and personal information
- Prohibit unlawful, discriminatory, deceptive, or unethical AI use
- Conduct periodic AI risk assessments and governance reviews
- Provide AI training, awareness programs, and reporting mechanisms
Through continuous governance improvement, USI aims to foster trustworthy AI adoption while supporting innovation, stakeholder trust, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business growth.
