USI Supports for the Preservation of Cát Bà Island’s Biodiversity and the Transition of Aquaculture Farmers
-- The company commits to purchasing products one year from affected fish farms to mitigate the impact of the transition --
(2021-10-18 Haiphong, Vietnam) In line with its plans to transform Cát Bà Island into a national and international eco-travel center, the Haiphong City Government of Vietnam has stepped up efforts to remove the aquaculture farms around the waters of Cát Bà Island. USI responds to the city government’s call that encourages businesses, factories, organizations, and individuals to lend support to the national policy by purchasing aquatic products from the affected fish farms to mitigate their financial impact. USI Vietnam is demonstrating full support of the government’s efforts and the preservation of Cát Bà Island’s biodiversity, by committing to a year’s procurement from the fish farms since September.
Besides formulating plans to develop Cát Bà Island into a national and international eco-travel center, the Haiphong City Government is also targeting Cát Bà as the center for marine economic development, and the fishery logistics service and aquatic product center of Haiphong and the northern coast of Vietnam. These developments are in preparation for the island’s inclusion as part of the Halong Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago UNESCO world heritage site in 2022. On August 2021, the People’s Council of Haiphong City reviewed and passed related policies and regulations for the removal of aquaculture farms around the waters of Cát Bà Island. The council has also formulated measures to support the transition while at the same time, to address the preservation of the natural environment, the ecosystem and tourist sites.
On August 2021, the Haiphong Economic Zone Authority (HEZA) hosted a conference with enterprises for the assistance of aquaculture facilities removal of Cát Bà Island and procurement of aquatic products. HEZA representatives and enterprises such as USI, LiteOn, CHILISIN and LG attended the conference. USI Vietnam, which is located at the Deep C Industrial Zone of the Hải An District, Haiphong City, began engaging the Cát Bà Island fish farmers in early September with a commitment to purchase their aquatic products for a year. These purchases will be used as ingredients for meal preparation, expanding the menu choices, at the USI employee cafeteria.
