New Industrial Trends of USI Smart Home Service Expansion (II) (DIGITIMES)

Homekit-based Application Scenarios

To a large extent, the market perceives USI as an important player in hardware design and manufacturing. In view of the importance of software for the Internet of Things, the company has been inputting manpower into the development of software programs in recent years.

USI's Software Development and Practical Applications
Apple first announced the development of HomeKit, a smart home application, at the 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Then, in the latest iOS 10 system, HomeKit has its own independent Home app that controls all HomeKit-enabled smart devices around the house. Instead of installing different applications for different household devices, HomeKit provides a common communication protocol that enables users to use Siri or the Home app to connect and control household devices, and ensures secure connection of the iOS device to any IoT component compatible with HomeKit.
Coincidentally, Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, also launched its voice-controlled speaker, the Echo, along with its Alexa personal assistant. Different from the design of HomeKit, the Echo enables you to interact with it using your voice at any time and place, even when you are cooking dinner in the kitchen. For example, you can ask it to set the time for the oven, inquire it about recipes, command it to play music or read news or articles, or even have it order pizzas for you or remind you of to-do items. Most importantly, it is compatible with both iOS and Android, which means that Android-powered mobile phone users can also enjoy voice-controlled functions similar to those of HomeKit.

USI released the WM-BN-BM-22 WiFi SiP module in 2017 and designed a Lighting DemoBox to showcase how Alexa and HomeKit can be combined. First, the hardware must have the MFi (Made for iDevice) certification, while the software must provide a SDK suite compatible with the protocols of Alexa and HomeKit according to the properties of the product device and set, manage, and control all devices in a simple yet safe way through the Home app.

If you want to remotely control the lights in your home when you are away from home, you can set the iPad or Apple TV (4th generation) as the home hub to manage remote access and edit invitations to control family members' access. Family members can control Alexa devices or HomeKit accessories from any place, or particular scenarios can be executed automatically at a specific point of time. In this way, a smart home is created. Furthermore, with the SDK suite, the developer can shorten the period of development and accelerate integration with Alexa and HomeKit. In the near future, we can simply use Alexa or Siri to remotely manage our home. "Hey Siri! Turn on the lights!"

In the IoT product supply chain, USI can provide customized software solutions while boasting a rich and diversified variety of hardware products. By combining hardware and software solutions, it can provide customers with Turnkey Services.
